One bag built the pre-owned Balenciaga market: the City, Nicolas Ghesquière's slouchy, studded "motorcycle" bag of 2001. Two decades on, vintage City bags in the right leather and hardware are the most fought-over Balenciaga pieces in Japan — and Japan has them in depth, because the motorcycle era sold enormously here. This guide covers the models worth hunting, how the leathers age, and the markers that matter on a bag that was faked from the day it launched.

The icons
City (Motorcycle). The slouchy silhouette, whipstitched handles, stud-and-buckle front and dangling leather tassels are unmistakable. Regular Hardware (brass, tassel zip pulls) is the 2001 original; Giant Hardware (thimbles, from 2007) changes the scale entirely. Sizes run First, City, Part Time and Work — the City is the liquid classic.
Le Cagole. Demna's 2021 answer to the motorcycle bag: crescent shoulder bag, heart mirror, studs and a pouch, in crinkled or croc-embossed leather. Recent enough that pre-owned examples are near-new, and a softer entry price than retail.
Hourglass. The curvilinear structured top-handle (2019) with the B clasp — Balenciaga's polished counterpoint to the slouch. Box calfskin versions are the dressy pick and hold their shape and value well.

Materials and how they age
Agneau (lambskin). The classic motorcycle leather: buttery, distressed from new, and it slouches more with wear — a well-kept City's leather should feel supple, not dry or cracked. Colour fading, especially on black (which can go greenish) and bright colours, is the first check. Chèvre (goatskin) on some early-2000s seasons is more durable and more collectible. Arena leather on Le Cagole is deliberately crinkled — distinguish the finish from damage. Corners and handle edges wear first on all of them.
Authentication markers
The vintage City's leather tag inside carries the season letter, style and leather codes — the letter must match the bag's era and hardware type, which is where copies usually fail. Lampo zippers (marked on the underside) are correct for the Ghesquière era. Mirror, tassels and studs should match the bag's hardware finish exactly; replacement tassels are common and should be disclosed. Balenciaga's superfakes are convincing, so every Balenciaga bag at BRAND GET is verified with Entrupy authentication before listing.
Condition checks before you buy
- Leather dryness: cracking at folds and handle roots is the deal-breaker
- Colour fade: black turning green-grey; corners lighter than panels
- Corners: piping worn through on City and Part Time bases
- Handles: darkening and edge wear on the whipstitched pair
- Extras: mirror, tassels and dust bag present — they affect value
Our condition rank guide shows how these flaws map to the N–B grades we list.
Price drivers
Early-2000s chèvre leather and rare colours (2003–2005 seasons) are the collector tier; standard agneau City bags in black are the everyday sweet spot. Giant Hardware prices sit above Regular Hardware in the same colour. Le Cagole and Hourglass follow retail-relative pricing — condition matters more than season.
