Pre-owned Saint Laurent Kate tassel bag in black croc-embossed leather

The Pre-Owned Saint Laurent Buying Guide

Pre-owned Saint Laurent divides neatly by designer era: the YSL Rive Gauche years (Muse, Downtown), the Slimane rebrand to Saint Laurent Paris (Sac de Jour, monogram chain bags), and the Vaccarello era (Loulou, Niki). Japan stocked all three eras deeply, and the monogram hardware bags in particular circulate here in excellent grades. This guide covers the models worth hunting, how the leathers age, and the details that separate genuine pieces from copies.

The icons

Loulou. The quilted chevron shoulder bag with the Cassandre YSL clasp — the house's modern bestseller. Toy, Small and Medium sizes in matelassé calfskin; the puffer versions trade softness for capacity. Black with gold or silver hardware is the most liquid combination on the pre-owned market.

Kate and Sunset. The chain-wallet silhouette perfected: Kate's sharp envelope flap with tassel option, Sunset's accordion body with key fob. Both ride on the same Cassandre hardware, and both are heavily faked — construction quality is the tell.

Sac de Jour. Slimane's structured tote (2013), the house's answer to the Birkin brief. Smooth or grained calfskin, accordion sides, padlock and clochette. Baby and Nano sizes made it an everyday bag; the larger sizes are the boardroom original.

Materials and how they age

Matelassé calfskin (Loulou) should stay puffy — flattened quilting at the flap fold and corner scuffs are the checks. Smooth calfskin (Kate, Sunset, Sac de Jour) scratches visibly; grain de poudre and grained leathers hide wear far better and are the practical pre-owned pick. Croc-embossed and patent finishes show fingerprints and edge wear — examine in the photos, corner by corner. Suede (Niki's other life) picks up colour transfer.

Authentication markers

The Cassandre logo hardware is the first check: letters should be precisely formed, evenly finished and firmly mounted — soft edges on the metal are a warning. Inside, the leather tag carries a style number and a date code (three letters, month and year) whose format changed across eras; the tag's font and stitching must match the era of the bag. Heat stamps read "Saint Laurent Paris / Made in Italy" (or France on some lines). Every Saint Laurent bag at BRAND GET is verified with Entrupy authentication before listing.

Condition checks before you buy

  • Quilting (Loulou): puffiness intact, no flat spots at folds
  • Chain straps: even finish, no flaking at the links' contact points
  • Corners: smooth leather bags scuff at base corners first
  • Clasp: Cassandre hardware tight, magnetic closure aligned
  • Structure (Sac de Jour): accordion sides even, no leaning

Our condition rank guide shows how these flaws map to the N–B grades we list.

Price drivers

Black on black and black with gold hardware hold prices hardest across the monogram lines. Grained leather Sac de Jour pieces are the value pick — same silhouette, less visible wear, lower price than smooth. YSL-era vintage (Muse, Downtown) trades as nostalgia: cheap to buy, bought for love rather than resale.
